A 13-year-old was shot in the back Wednesday evening in Schenectady, prompting an active investigation by local authorities.
According to the Schenectady Police Department, officers were dispatched around 8:18 p.m. on March 19 to the 500 block of Summit Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound to the back and immediately provided first aid until emergency medical personnel arrived.

The department’s Youth Aid Bureau and Major Crimes Unit are leading the investigation. In a statement, Police Chief Brian J. Whipple expressed concern over the incident, calling violence involving children “especially heartbreaking and unacceptable.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue working with community partners and local schools to address and prevent youth violence.
