A tragic and highly unusual case has emerged in Centennial, where an 11-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 5-year-old brother.
According to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the child is also facing an aggravated juvenile offender sentence enhancer. The incident occurred on March 10 at the family’s home in Centennial, located outside Denver.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said the 11-year-old was taken into custody following the younger child’s death. He is currently being held at the Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center.
Authorities have not released specific details about the circumstances of the case or the cause of death, noting that juvenile records are not public.
Legal experts say it is extremely rare for someone so young to face a first-degree murder charge, as questions often arise regarding a child’s mental capacity to form criminal intent.
In a statement, Sheriff Tyler Brown expressed condolences to the family and the community, noting that cases involving children are among the most difficult for investigators and can deeply affect families, schools, and neighborhoods.
The case remains under investigation.
